Belief vs. Life Philosophy: The Paradox of Modern Capitalism and Our Values

We all gather beliefs in day to day life like hoodies and fridge magnets through this beautiful journey called life. Something that is deeply linked to our sense of importance, freedom and belonging or community. I was reflecting that belief on its own is not enough. Your beliefs itself are contingent on you surviving and preaching that said belief through practicing it. For instance, you can’t eat a belief or continue your day to day life and economies of existence solely on it.  My view is that your belief is hamstrung to your life philosophy. The life philosophy that shapes your daily values, use of intellect and purpose in life. That’s where fun kicks in; our default life philosophy is usually crowdsourced from personal, cultural and geographical conditioning. My understanding is that the default religion of the world and probably the most common religion in today’s world is pursuit of happiness, acquiring external things for status and minimisation of pain i.e. capitalism and consumerism.

Redundancy to Abundancy

When we start reading on this ‘well-guarded’ and ‘less-talked-about’ open secret of hard times—trimming the employee hedge for shareholder value—the literature, books, and blog posts are usually optimistic timeline stories of how renowned influential business leaders overcame this by resilience or other buzzwords. The intention of this piece is to outline ‘a How-to Manual or Guide’ if you’ve found yourself in this unavoidable consequence of modern work, self-worth, and purpose-and-life conundrum. If you do not retain anything from this piece, just remember, roles and titles are made redundant, not people.

Because good-looking people have perfect lives and unfaultable existence!

Research has shown that we (everyday folks) automatically assign favourable traits such as talent, kindness, honesty, and intelligence to good-looking individuals (see Langlois et al., 2000). The irony is that “good-looking people” are aware that other people’s positive evaluations of them are not based on their actual traits and abilities are caused by a general attractiveness or “halo” ― Robert B. Cialdini, Influence
